Longest-running West End Shows

In light of so many show closures and new openings. I thought this would be an interesting time to look back at some of the true long runners of the industry and how they have stayed so popular in such a competitive environment. This list will also show the true history of the West End as the theatre hub officially started with Theatre Royal Drury Lane opening all the way back in 1663. During this time the West End has grown to 39 theatres from massive playhouses like the Apollo Victoria with a capacity of over 2000 to small intimate venues like the Arts theatre with only a 350 capacity. There has been countless shows playing at a near constant turnaround but these are the 6 shows that are the longest-running west end shows.

The Mousetrap – 73 years

Longest-running West End Shows

The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie is the longest running show in the entire world. Starting all the way back in 1952 the show has become a bit of a legend. And many tourists and locals flock to it daily to see how this murder mystery secret has been kept for all these years. Based on the classic Agatha Christie novel the Mousetrap tells the story of this unlikely group of characters. Who become trapped in a hotel during a snow storm before one mysteriously turns up dead. We then follow along the investigation and the audience is kept guessing over whodunit. The play also famously ends with the cast telling the audience to help them keep the secret.

Tickets for the show are always very hot but everyday they release cheap front row seats in the stalls. Visit us at our ticket booth in Leicester square for £27 seats on the day.

Les Miserable – 30 years

Les Miserable is the longest running musical in the world playing now in the West End for 30 years. The show has played over 15,000 performances. It is now celebrating it’s 30th anniversary with a special cast from alumni of the show. The musical follows Jean Valjean, a french peasant, who is released on parole after 19 years of imprisonment for stealing a loaf of bread. Over decades we follow him on his new life searching for redemption as the revolutionary period in France commences. The musical is the most awarded show in the world with some of the most famous songs being “I dreamed a dream”, “Do you hear the people sing” and “At the end of the day”.

The Phantom of the Opera – 29 years

The Phantom of the Opera is the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical about the tragic story of Christine Daae, who becomes the obsession of the mysterious musical genius. Who live below the Paris Opera House, The Phantom. The show has been seen by 20 million people an is praised for it’s grandeur and simplicity. It also tackles the classic themes of love and obession, which means it connects well with international audiences as well. The show includes the iconic titular song “The Phantom of the Opera” and other classics like “Music of the Night” and “All I Ask of You”.

Mamma Mia – 26 years

Mamma Mia is the first and only jukebox musical on this list composed by Catherine Johnson. And based on the songs by ABBA the Swedish group. The musical is named after the 1975 chart topper “Mamma Mia! and the original band members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus were involved in the entire process. The musical features all of Abba’s greatest hits like “Super trouper”, “Dancing Queen”, “Knowing me, Knowing you” and “Voulez-Vous”. It has also been adapted into a film starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried in 2008. The story follows Sophie who is looking for her real father to attend her wedding. Guaranteed to be a fun night filled with joyous songs the show has drawn over 70 million people worldwide.

The Lion King – 26 years

The Lion King is the most successful Disney musical based on original animated film. The show debuted 1997 three years after the film and was an instant success. It feature actors in animal costumes as well as giant hollow puppets. The show won many awards including best musical at the Tony’s but also won Best Costume across the board. For it’s revolutionary use of puppets and animal costumes. The show blends a beloved story with captivating visuals and universally loved music to create a show that has been simultaneously running in the West End and Broadway for over 20 years. It is also the first show on the list to delight audiences across the ocean for this long. As it’s still playing after Phantom, Mamma Mia and Les Mis closed on Broadway.

Wicked – 19 years

Wicked has been running for 18 years at the Apollo Victoria theatre in London and shows no sign of lowing down after the film came out last year to massive commercial success and praise from critics. The musical is loosely based on the book by Gregory Maguire. It tells the unheard story of the Wicked Witch of the West from the classic story The Wizard of Oz. The show has been seen by over 12 million people in London alone. And has won awards all over the world including three tony’s and a Grammy for Best Musical Album. The film Wicked: For Good adapts the second half of the stage show and is due to be released this November.

Honorable Mention: Starlight Express – 18 + 1 years

Starlight Express is an honorable mention for this list as the revival currently playing isn’t the same production as the one that ran for 18 years but it is notable as one of the few cases of a long runner closing and then coming back. Starlight Express is another Andrew Lloyd Webber show and is about a child’s train-set coming to life in his dreams and competing to become the fastest engine in the world. Playing in the specially built Troubadour Theatre the show famously has all the actors on rollerskates. The theatre is split into Platforms, carriages and the locomotive for a immersive experience.

Burlesque Review Round-Up

Burlesque the musical has officially finished it’s previews and has had their opening night at the Savoy Theatre. The show opened to some controversy online after there was a big change in the creative team after the director and Choreographer left the production which meant Todrick Hall who was starring in the show then took on both roles. The opening preview also generated some buzz for starting quite late and ending after 11pm despite the original runtime. Now that the press night has happened and the reviews are in the show is showing it’s true merits.

Burlesque Review Round-Up

The Guardian ★★★★★

“What a tremendous breath of fresh air. Amid the indefatigable rise of movies cynically re-spun for the stage, this musical adaptation of the 2010 film … goes its own eccentric way.”

“Todrick Hall’s choreography is a sensation, with jaw-dropping athleticism, balletic moves and circus acrobatics, while Marco Marco’s “more is more” costumes deserve an award.”

“The show as a whole bares it artifice every now and again, but without indulging in knowingness.”

“The whole thing is very RuPaul. There is no lip-syncing, as in the film, but enough leather, feathers, sequins and disco ball lighting for a season of Drag Race.”

“It is over-adrenalised and messy in its plotting, but you forgive the blips. This is a production stuffed with personality, spectacle and wow factor. Come for the nostalgia, perhaps, but stay for the new kicks: bigger, naughtier and camp as hell.n.”

Arifa Akbar

The Telegraph ★★★★

Christina Aguilera’s raunchy Burlesque musical is a cult hit in the making

“Well, this is a surprise…. this knowingly daft riff on the 2010 Christina Aguilera and Cher movie emerges as a strange sort of triumph.”

“Hall embodies the show’s meta-lite theatricality by turning the fact he plays both Tess’s queeny right-hand man Sean, and Ali’s vodka-swilling gospel teacher Miss Loretta into a running gag. He makes a virtue out of the show’s scrappy DNA and madcap, extemporaneous air”

“… sometimes it’s hard to know if the show is being wink-wink referential or simply derivative… Yet the buzz is infectious. Folley is formidable as Ali, easily Aguilera’s equal”

Claire Allfree

The Times ★★★

Car crash? Actually it’s rather compelling

“Connoisseurs of theatre car crashes are going to be disappointed… despite its rough edges — the book, by the film’s director, Steven Antin, gets hopelessly tangled in the second half — Todrick Hall’s production has more vim than that other recently arrived contender in the hen party stakes, The Devil Wears Prada. And in the pairing of Jess Folley and the American singer Orfeh (who is making her West End debut) the evening unfurls some powerhouse vocals.

“… whenever Folley gets her moment centre stage, she’s utterly compelling. You only wish, too, that the petite Orfeh had more opportunities to showcase a voice that’s a mixture of granite and bourbon.”

“Aguilera’s Express gives Act II an explosive opening kick as Ali discovers her inner vamp. It wasn’t always possible to make out the lyrics to the songs, but the ensemble’s sheer energy made amends.”

Clive Davis

The Stage ★★★

“Messy, over-extended movie musical adaptation with star turns from Jess Folley and Orfeh”

“For all the dramas on stage and off, Burlesque is an upbeat, sassy story packed with astounding vocals – extensively from Folley and Orfeh – and some genuinely exciting dance routines choreographed by Hall.”

Paul Vale

City AM ★★★★

“Rachel Zegler is enthralling as Evita in this gorgeous sensory overload of a show”

“this populist gesture is emblematic of Jamie Lloyd’s big, bold, stadium rally of a staging. With its virtuoso star Zegler romancing a rapt audience both inside and outside the theatre’s walls.”

“this gorgeous sensory overload of a show is its own comment on the rising tide of fascism. Populism is sexy, captivating, overpowering – a way for weary people to escape the dull realities of right and wrong. You know there’s something deeply twisted under that pretty shiny surface, but, like the audiences of Evita, you’re powerless to resist.”

Alice Saville

The Theatre Talk ★★★★

It recieved similarly positive reviews back when it was on at the Manchester Opera House with the same cast reprising their roles.

“The show itself opens with one of the more successful changes. A prologue penned and performed by Todrick Hall (as Sean) whips the audience into frenzied excitement”

“Burlesque is a spectacle with dazzling choreography, tantalising costuming and impressive staging.”

“Even the most devoted Aguilera fans cannot deny that Jess Folley is an absolute revelation as Ali, single handedly stealing the show. Even on a sweltering June evening, she manages to give you goosebumps with her powerhouse vocals.”

“A particular highlight is ‘Bound To You’, in which she beautifully duets with leading man Michael Mather (Jackson). Never putting a foot wrong, she is worth the ticket price alone.”

Overall from the Burlesque Review Round-Up we see it has received overall good reviews and it shows we shouldn’t judge a show in it’s preview stages too harshly. As that is when changes and errors are more permissible. The show is running for a strictly limited season at the Savoy until Paddington takes over!

So don’t miss your chance and see the acclaimed cast in this production!

Great views for cheap prices – Best West End Theatres

Here’s part 2 to my previous best theatres to go to for a great views for cheap prices. It’s not easy to find good deals for all the shows we want to see but if you’re on a budget it doesn’t mean you can’t still get a good close view of the show. Here’s three more theatres that offer great views even from the cheapest seats in the auditorium.

Dominion Theatre

Conveniently located right opposite Tottenham Court Road station the Dominion Theatre with it’s huge marquee and bright red heel is hard to miss. But the inside of the Theatre is somehow even more glamorous. With rich red seats and walls the Theatre is truly one of the grandest interiors in the West End. Although originally planned as a musical theatre the venue spent just over 50 years as a cinema. Where it notably hosted Charlie Chaplin London premier of City Lights. In 1981 it became a live venue and has since hosted many musicals. The theatre is huge with a 2000+ capacity spread over two floors. Both floors have decent rake and tiering which means heads are normally not an issue. With multiple aisles separating the blocks of seating access is fairly easy and even the further seats have decent legroom and uninterrupted views.

The current show is The Devil Wears Prada starring Vanessa Williams. Based on the iconic hit film the new musical has finally landed in London’s West End. With music by Elton John and a book by Paul Rudnick who also worked on the screenplay for the original film. The show has been praised for it’s performances. Vanessa Williams said to be a true star and stepping up to the iconic role originally played by Meryl Streep. With Amy Di Bartolomeo receiving an Olivier nomination for her role as Emily. The show is currently booking till January 3rd 2026 and Vanessa Williams will star until 18th October. Don’t miss your chance to see her incredible Miranda Priesley and book in advance now for the best prices.

Shaftesbury Theatre

The Shaftesbury Theatre is located in Shaftesbury avenue and was originally the New Prince’s Theatre before it’s name change in 1963. The Theatre has three floors and the upper circle is always very reasonably priced. Although the seats are not the most comfortable with some complaints about limited legroom the view will hopefully make up for it. The view is clear and still feels quite close with a good span of the entire stage. And the dress circle and stalls are even better with good rakes and tiers to both.

Just for one day is now playing at the Shaftesbury until January 2026. It is a gloriously fun but informative musical about how the Live Aid Concert came about. Starring Craige Els as Bob Geldof we follow the story of Band Aid which became Live Aid. And how this mammoth music event that was like nothing before it and nothing after it came to be.

The Other Palace

Great views for cheap prices

The Other Palace is the newest theatre on this list opening in 2012. It’s also the only off West End theatre. When built it was described by the architect as the “first newly built theatre complex in central London for 30 years”. Designed more like a cinema the cinema only technically has one floor the stalls but it is tiered the entire way up which means you’ll never have to look around or over someone’s head. And at only 13 rows deep you’re never too far from the action. This is probably one of the best in London for great views for cheap prices.

The show currently playing at the Other Palace is Saving Mozart, a new musical about the true story of the genius and the people in his life who helped shape him to the musical legend he is remembered as. Starring Aimie Atkinson, Jack Chambers and Erin Caldwell the story delves into Mozart’s life. His family and the extraordinary women who challenged, shaped and ultimately saved him.

After Saving Mozart’s limited 5 week run, 50 first dates will open on the 14th September. Bringing the iconic Adam Sandler rom-com to stage, the musical adapts the heartfelt hilarious story of bachelor Henry meeting Lucy and after an amazing first date where he’s convinced shes the one. She wakes up the next morning with no memory of their first date. Starring Georgina Castle(Mean Girls) and Josh St. Clair(Ghost) the new musical is a heart-warming love story worth seeing over and over.

Hopefully this has helped you with deciding what shows to potentially see on a budget. For Great views for cheap prices book with theatrebookings now!

The Best West End Theatres

The West End is made up of 39 theatres each with their own quirks and beauty. The oldest is the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane which opened all the way badck in May 1663. Given how old some of these theatres are it’s no surprise that not all are as comfortable or well tiered as we have come to expect by modern standards. But more often than not the theatres have been refurbished while keeping the grand exteriors and rich history. Still with high tickets prices I’ve compiled a list of the best West End theatres where even the cheapest seat in the house still offers a great view which will elevate the theatre experience. Of course these are all subjective and no theatre can be perfect but these definitely get a lot of it right

Gillian Lynne Theatre

The Best West End Theatres

Starting off the list with one of the newer theatres in the West End the Gillian Lynne opened in 1973 and was originally called the New London Theatre. Before it was renamed in 2018 in honour of Gillian Lynne a famous choreographer. The theatre boasts close to 1000 seats distributed between two levels. The theatre is fairly unique in that the stalls has a steep rake similar to the dress circle. Due to this and the large circular stage almost every single seat offers a good and comfortable view.

The current show playing is My Neighbour Totoro which had an extremely successful and sold out run earlier last year. The award-winning play follows the Studio Ghibli story of Totoro a rabbit monster and it’s bond with two sisters. Reviews describe it as “a profoundly magical experience” and “a feel-good, uplifting and utterly transportive production.”

Prince of Wales

The Prince of Wales Theatre was established back in 1884 but was extensively refurbished in 2004. Which is why the interior is much more modern than it’s age might suggest. With a capacity of 1148 spread across two levels. The theatre’s dress circle overhangs the stalls by a good amount. Both tiers are quite steeply tiered which means other patrons are unlikely to block your view. With the bigger overhang this means even the back of the second level still feels quite close. The gently curved auditorium also means the side seats have no restrictions. And all audience members can still enjoy the show in it’s entirety.

The Book of Mormon is the longest running show at the the Prince of Wales beating Mamma Mia! which ran here for 8 years before transferring. Written by the creators of South Park the show is a hilarious and witty musical poking fun at the rigorous lifestyles of Mormon missionary.

Apollo Victoria Theatre

Wicked is the iconic musical based on the wicked witch of the west from the Wizard of Oz. The musical has been playing in the UK for 18 years and has consistently sold out the Apollo Victoria theatre which is the second largest venue second only to the Coliseum. With a capacity of 2,328 it speaks to how beloved and magical the story is.

The Apollo Victoria opened in 1929 originally as a cinema and was then reopened as a theatre. Many iconic shows have played there including The Sound of music and Starlight Express which also ran for a staggering 18 years. It was then remodelled to remove the tracks and housed Wicked after it’s Broadway transfer. Over the years the theatre has been made to embody the show it plays. From the lobby to the auditorium it is full of decorations and pieces of the shows history such as old costumes. Everything is Wicked themed and the green lighting really ties it all together. The two floors are both tiered to offer a good view even from the back and even though the seats can be a bit far the staggered construction and decorations means the theatre experience will always feel special.

Ambassadors Theatre

The Ambassadors Theatre is one of the smallest theatres in the West End with a capacity of 444. It openeds back in 1913 and was briefly renamed the new ambassadors theatre between 1999-2007. Although quite an old theatre with some rows especially in the dress circle that offer limited legroom. Overall the theatre greatly benefits from it’s small size. Even from the very back of the dress circle the stage is still very visible and feels quite close. This means even the most affordable seats are still providing the audience member with a premium view that in other theatres they would charge double for. The stage is also sloped downwards towards the stalls which give the show a welcoming immersive feel.

The show playing until Oct 11th is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. This years best new musical at the Olivier’s. The show’s concept is based on the F Scott Fitzgerald short story about a man who ages backwards but that’s where the similarities stop. The original story portrays Benjamin who is inexplicably born a man of 70. We then follow the chapters of his life told through a charming soundtrack of Cornish folk music. The show received 5 star reviews across the board and is one you don’t want to miss hailed as the best of home grown British musicals.

Book with theatrebookings now if you’re interested in seeing any of these shows!

Kinky Boots transfer to the West End

The Kinky Boots transfer is happening! This beloved classic will be back in the West End from March to September in 2026. Following a tour of UK’s regional theatres. The show will be starring Johannes Radebe who is currently starring in the show. This will mark his West End debut. Furthermore he is most well known for his appearances in strictly come dancing where he reached the final in 2021. This was also significant as this would be the first all-male partnership in the show.

Kinky Boots won the Tony award back in 2013 after debuting on Broadway. It is based on the 2005 film of the same name. The story follows Charlie who inherits his family’s shoe manufacturing company. He then partners with Lola a drag queen in order to design a women’s boot that will be comfortable for a man in an attempt to save the business.

Kinky Boots transfer

Radebe said: “I left my township in Zamdela at the age of 21 to dance in the ensemble on a cruise ship. Every night we did ABBA. That was my dream come true. Never then, nor since then. Was it in my wildest dreams that I would have the opportunity to star in a musical in London’s West End. And not just any musical – my favourite musical. Kinky Boots.

“My involvement in Kinky Boots has been six years in the making. And Lola was the only role I ever wanted to play. Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper have written a show about accepting people for who they are. And the love our production has received across the UK has been overwhelming, beautiful and life changing.”
